20th Century Women

En 1979, à Santa Barbara. Depuis son divorce quelques années plus tôt, Dorothea Fields s'occupe seule son fils de 15 ans, Jamie. Dans sa grande maison, dont elle a fait une pension, Dorothea a deux locataires aux vies compliquées : Julie, 17 ans et Abbie, 28 ans. William, qui effectue des travaux de rénovation, fait également partie de leur entourage. Alors que Dorothea tente d'accompagner son fils, qui passe par différents états de l'adolescence, Jamie se confie plus volontiers à Julie, qui ne le laisse pas vraiment indifférent. Dorothea demande alors aux deux jeunes femmes de l'aider à mieux le comprendre.
